From the Author

Almula Merter Churm

Life is a ponderous ocean and we are experiencing what we caught among the hundreds of thousands of things in that ocean.

I have always gone after my dreams.

As far as I can remember, I’ve been an extraordinary one for what I’ve been told. In fact, as far as I am concerned, what I did was very normal. I have started postsynching at nine. Even though I was born and raised on the stages of theaters, since my family said, ”This girl is studying very well, she should go to a university”, I have got education on sociology first and then on psychology. After that, I said, “Look, I did what you have asked, and now it’s my turn” and studied in the theater department of the conservatory and entered the State Theater. Then when I have seen and got irritated, angry with those who played a lot of directorship in the institution, I resigned. At that time, I have entered an exam held by the Italian government, received a scholarship and settled in Italy for a while. After three or four years, I have returned to my home country and re-entered the State Theaters. In the eighties, for the first time in Turkey, I have presented a program in TRT named “For You Ladies”, a program without belly dancing, even more a program with a quiz show in its context. Then began the private channel popularity and I have settled and started working in Istanbul. I have taken parts and performed in many TV shows, acted in motion pictures. One night I have decided to go to America and performed my decision. While studying there, I have worked and earned money by making sales as a clerk and within a period of two months I was assigned to the position of the assistant general manager in the company. On behalf of the company, I have worked in the United Arab Emirates for six months.

Thanks to my obstinacy, I have met Ahmet Ertegün, the owner of Atlantic Records, and that’s when a lot has changed; incredible doors opened to me. One day I have watched his play named “The Vagina Monologues” and I decided that this game should be exhibited in Turkey. When I have taken this idea to Ertegün for sponsoring, he said, “Tell me that you don’t have money for yourself and you need money, I will help you. But if you have an intention of taking this play to Turkey and staging such a play there and you think you can make money out of this, do not expect anything from me” and concluded by saying “Moreover, you can’t take back the things you have turned down here”. But, when I decide on something, even if they raise huge giants in front of me, I bulldoze them off. It happened again. Because I believed in that…

I have staged the play and the Vagina Monologues achieved great success. At that time, we have reached the number of spectators that no one had reached. No place was left in Turkey at which we have not staged this play. I, as one of the five women representing the Muslim women’s movements in the world, have attracted great attention, especially in France. In Belgium I have staged this play with artists such as Annie Lenox, Eve Ensler and Kate Winslet. Eve Ensler has announced me to everyone as “Our Brave Heart!”. One of the district governors has tried to ban my play in Istanbul and said, “This play cannot be performed with this name!” and I said to him, “If I spell out your position, you would close down your office!”* This phrase has passes into history and it still surfs the web after nineteen years. I have published interview books. I have given personal development trainings and I have given lessons at the universities under the name of “Science of Life-Biology”. In the forums, my students from Istanbul Technical University wrote “A little bit of a different kind of a teacher, but is a lot fun! ” for me. Once being obsessed with women’s rights, I have essayed to stage a play on domestic violence and had my father performed the leading role, in other words, the man who inflicts the domestic violence. Some newspapers have given headlines as, “Wow, the hussy who is not ashamed of anything! Someone should knock down this woman to size! Has her own father raped her? “. Then various court proceedings had taken place and we have won all together with my father. Some have showed up, claimed and said, “They are making up an event that does not exist in Turkey!”. Then with the opinion that “Actually East and West cannot be separated from each other”; I have synthesized and put on the play named Alaaddin on stage in Bulgaria and in the Balkan countries as a musical. I have tagged along behind the Italian circus and lived with them for a year and a half. When I have returned to Istanbul, I have undertaken the operation of a theater hall of six hundred and fifty people and had it done all over again from scratch. But I’ve had gone through two big bankruptcies due to the exploding pipes because of the infrastructure problem in the hall. I had been snowed under the promissory notes and the cheques, but I have not given up. I have written in newspapers and magazines as a columnist. And one day, I have said, “I’m starting all over again,” and have come to England with the last five thousand liras in my pocket. At the age of forty-six, I have started a new life from scratch. I, who was used to living in huge houses, have moved from room to room to gain grounds in England and tried to do my job. I have never been undaunted by the answers I didn’t get and by the phone calls that were not returned. Finally, I have established my success in postsynching and business perseverance to the British. I have set up production companies named The Fame Academy and AMC. I believed in my dream which I had seen at the age of five; I was getting married to an Englishman in a church and was walking down the aisle to the padre on the arm of my father. And this dream has come true. At the age of 51, my biggest dream of sensing of motherhood has also come true by adopting two siblings. I have traveled the world, learned the cultures and languages of the places I live in. I have always found the courage to leave the places where I felt unhappy. I have always trusted and believed in myself.

I have never stopped going after my dreams and my dreams have come true as I found the courage to run behind them.

*Note of the Translator: In Turkish the word “kaymakam” means district governor, however if one divides the word into two and spells it differently as “kaymak am”, it means “creamy pussy”.
